Volunteer work in kindergarten Experience report

We worked in a kindergarten just a few minutes from home where we looked after a group of around 20 children between the ages of 4 and 5. In the beginning we all had to get to know each other a little, but soon we really fell in love with our little darlings and we could hardly imagine having to leave them again so soon.

Theresa's time in South Africa

Flight to Cape Town

Everything started with a packed suitcase, anticipation and a queasy feeling in my stomach: Lara, my school friend, and I made our way to the airport to throw ourselves fully into the exciting experience of Cape Town. Without even knowing what was in store for us, we boarded the plane and let it carry us into the unknown. Of course we were more than excited and very tense, so the flight went by quickly and after a short stop in Dubai we landed perfectly on time on African soil, where we were immediately welcomed by Chad, Jemaine's brother, and another volunteer .

The first days in the Student House

The two drove us straight to the Student House, which for us was a beautiful villa, always inhabited by life and people, which we would visit several times a week despite the host family. We stayed there for the first two nights, met a bunch of nice, open and just as adventurous young adults like us, made friends and in the first few days climbed Lion's Head together - a mountain in Cape Town from which you have the most beautiful view ever , Highly Recommended!!! – and got to know the metropolis on an extensive CityBus tour.

Our dear host family

The excitement was constantly at its peak and should not disappear in the next few days: On Friday evening Lara and I were finally taken to our host family, who were supposed to offer us board and lodging for six weeks. We were extremely fortunate as our host family was an elderly couple who loved us as if we were their own daughters. During our stay in Cape Town we did great things with them, we saw many exciting places, went to eat sushi together, got to know children and grandchildren and were often spoiled with delicious pancakes and fresh food from our dear hostmum.

Volunteer project in kindergarten

Also the volunteer work that we mastered there every day brought us a lot of joy and experience. We worked in a kindergarten just a few minutes from home where we looked after a group of around 20 children between the ages of 4 and 5. In the beginning we all had to get to know each other a little, but soon we really fell in love with our little darlings and we could hardly imagine having to leave them again so soon.

Leisure fun

Our free time was always packed with some great action-packed, eventful, unique excursions and activities. For example, we took part in the safari tour organized by RGV, which was just incredibly exciting and varied. Benjamin, our cool tour guide, drove with us along the Garden Route for 3 days. From penguins and whales to caves and wild animals to an extensive buffet in our luxury lodge, everything your heart desires was there!

The end of our way too short journey

All in all, it was an incredibly exciting, varied and wonderful time that can hardly be summed up in such a short report. I will never forget this time and was very sad when the big farewell approached. Time has flown by for me and I recommend everyone to surrender to the Cape Town adventure because it is worth it! You can leave Africa, but Africa never leaves you! Conclusion: An adventurous journey that was more than worth it from start to finish!
