Volunteers play a throwing game with seniors

What's the matter?

The location in which you are active as a volunteer is one of the poorest districts in Barcelona. Many people live here in poor conditions. This also applies to the approximately 15% of citizens who are over 65 years old. They often live very distantly from other residents and therefore have hardly any social connections. Care and medical care are also often neglected.

The aim of the local operation center is to give the neighborhood in Barcelona a sense of community and thus create an environment of solidarity.

In volunteer work with seniors, this is achieved by actively integrating older people into the neighborhood community in order to counteract isolation and enable them to lead an active and connected life. Through your volunteer work, you can also support local nursing staff and thus make a positive contribution to the health of older people.

Your tasks as a volunteer

Caring for older people or people in need of support is a project with various tasks. One task is to organize and lead workshops for people with disabilities or addictions. To do this, it is necessary to precisely understand the needs of the community and plan activities that are tailored to the respective skills and interests of the participants.

An important aspect of this work is also building close relationships with people nearing the end of their lives. You talk to each other and take walks together to provide them company and support during this phase of their lives.

You also have the opportunity to get to know the cultural diversity and language of older generations as part of the project. You can do this by exchanging stories, sharing traditions, and engaging in cultural activities to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for each other. There is also the chance to explore Barcelona far away from the typical tourist paths. By participating in the project, you will get to know the city from a new perspective and forge a closer connection with the community.

As a volunteer, you can take on different tasks depending on your preferences and skills. However, your commitment is valued in all areas as it helps to improve the quality of life of older people or people in need of care and strengthens the community as a whole.

If you go to Barcelona as a volunteer, you will take part in weekly mentoring. There is also a workshop on mindfulness on Wednesdays and group coaching is offered every two weeks, where the volunteers exchange ideas about their experiences. In addition, you start the day in the morning with a 30-minute wellness routine that consists of yoga exercises, meditation and positive affirmations.
