Joinery project Ghana

What's the matter?

Ghana is struggling with major environmental problems. Because the extreme desert climate coming from the north is also changing the seasons and rainy seasons here in western Ghana dramatically. For years now, the Volta River has barely carried enough water to generate electricity on a regular basis. The population and industry suffer from permanent power failures. Huge forest areas are cleared for charcoal production.

In the bamboo furniture project you can help create new jobs and protect natural resources!

Your place of work in Ghana is a carpenter's workshop in which sustainable furniture is made from the fast-growing raw material bamboo. The bamboo furniture project was launched as one of several development projects by our team in Axim. Training and jobs should be created and the local living space should be protected. The trainees and carpenters make the furniture by hand and take care of the ongoing repairs and construction work.

In order to offer the most comprehensive training possible, not only the manufacture of huts, tables, chairs and the like is taught, but also weaving with the bamboo "cane". The resulting decorations are often part of the finished furniture, lampshades, shelves and wastepaper baskets. The carpenters can also take part in further training courses. Experts also come to the facility regularly to pass on their know-how about the natural material.

The aim of the project is to open up new employment opportunities, particularly for the poorer local population. In addition, the use of the rapidly growing bamboo wood means that less forest is cleared and the environment is relieved. The proceeds from the sale of the goods go 100% to a non-profit project that promotes the use of bamboo.

Your tasks as a volunteer

Your tasks in volunteer work as a carpenter in Ghana are very diverse and varied. You will carry out various projects together with the workers on site. For example, you draw and plan chairs, tables, shelves, toys or boxes, which you then build and maintain. You will get a comprehensive insight into the craft of furniture production. You will also learn how to use the simplest, customary tools in the processing of the natural material bamboo.

Your creativity is also in demand! For example, you can research innovative ideas for making furniture and accessories yourself and consider possible combinations with existing materials such as stones, driftwood, coconuts, etc. Depending on your craftsmanship, you may also like to create something new. In addition, there are always tasks in the area of maintenance of the system, such as repairing fences, roofing and so on.

You usually work from Monday to Friday, about 7 hours a day. However, the working hours also depend on the heat.

Location

Axim

Ghana seew Akwaaba! – Welcome to Ghana! This culturally and scenically diverse country will immediately cast its spell on you. The friendliness and open-mindedness of the locals will certainly make it easy for you to settle in quickly!

In Axim you will do your volunteer work or your internship abroad in a sheltered bay on one of the most beautiful beaches on the west coast of Ghana. The nearby town of Axim has around 13.000 inhabitants and is located on a mangrove river that flows into the Gulf of Guinea.

Also, Axim is still pretty traditional. There is a large fishing community who sell their fresh catches at the local markets daily. Here you can try many other typical dishes of Ghana, such as fufu!

Your free time in Axim

After the work is done and on days off, you have enough time to relax and explore the area and the country.

One of the most beautiful beaches in the country awaits you in the immediate vicinity of the project site. Take the time to let this dream setting work its magic on you while you relax between white sand and palm trees, try your hand at surfing or admire the starry night sky with other volunteers around a campfire.

Should you ever feel like new impressions, we recommend a trip to the nearby town of Axim. Learn about the country's history with a visit to the old slave castle of Fort San Antonio and try your hand at a traditional market with freshly caught fish dishes and other delicacies such as the typical local fufu. Once a year, Axim also becomes the scene of the colorful Kundum Festival, where you can experience the Ghanaian lifestyle up close with plenty of drumming, dancing and food.

In addition to the beach and trips to the city, a canoe tour on the nearby river is definitely worthwhile, where with a little luck and patience you have the chance to observe crocodiles, turtles and monkeys in their natural environment.

But Ghana also has a lot to offer outside of the immediate vicinity of the deployment site that you should not miss. A special highlight is the Kakum National Park, where you have the opportunity to hike between the crowns of the jungle giants on a treetop path that is unique in Africa and to marvel at the rainforest from a height of up to 45 meters.
