What's the matter?

The school system in Tanzania was once considered a model for other African countries. However, due to the poor economic development during the 1980s, the quality of education declined rapidly. In recent years, the Tanzanian government has therefore made targeted investments in education programs for primary schools (GIZ 2016).

Since the country's education programs have taken hold and primary school attendance has become free for everyone, a big step towards social justice has been taken. However, the problem remains that there is a lack of teachers and school materials. As a volunteer, you can actively contribute to creating a solid basis for a successful school career for the young students.

When you volunteer at a primary school, you can get involved at various locations in Tanzania. The facilities vary in level. However, the size of the classes and a lack of teaching materials pose a challenge in most schools. The primary school focuses on teaching, but the children also have time to play during the breaks or in the afternoon.

As a volunteer, you support the teachers in teaching the English language, among other things. Most of the time, the lessons consist of the lectures given by the teachers and the students taking notes. Unfortunately, there is often little time for the individual support of individual children. Those who cannot keep up with the subject matter often have great difficulties.

This is where you come in as a volunteer! With your help, the students can be supported more individually. The aim is to increase the children's performance and to make the lessons more varied.

Your tasks as a volunteer

You support the teachers in class by assisting with the preparation of worksheets and helping the children to solve the tasks. With your help, the weaknesses of individual students can also be addressed more individually. When planning lessons, you can bring in your own ideas, such as interactive elements and playful learning units. In this way you can help to make the lessons more varied.

Since there is a shortage of teaching materials in many schools in Tanzania and the purchase is expensive, you are welcome to bring some with you. Here you will find Tips for donations in kind. If you feel able to do so, you may - after consultation with the teaching staff - possibly even take on teaching units independently. You can also think about and prepare tasks and tips for self-learning in advance.

You usually work Monday to Friday. Your working day begins between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m. and ends between 13:00 and 15:00 p.m., when school officially closes. Of course you have a break in between. The exact daily routine will be discussed with you on site.

Accommodation Catering

Volunteer House in Mtwara

As a volunteer in Mtwara, you will live on a 15.000m² site with various bungalow houses. It depends on the number of volunteers and the time of year where exactly you will be accommodated. Other employees live on the same premises but in different rooms. You can reach your location on foot from all accommodations. WiFi is also available here.

The stone bungalows are equipped with wooden roof terraces and a roof made of bamboo, coconut and metal and are located on small hills in a small village near the city. From the roof terrace you have a great view over the green valley of Mtwara. The accommodation has space for up to 30 volunteers, who are housed separately in the rooms according to gender.

The accommodations have French toilets (no sit-in toilets) and showers with running water, a private fresh water well and a solar powered water pump. You will also find a spring with natural drinking water 100 meters away.

During your time as a volunteer you will receive half board, i.e. breakfast and dinner. You also have the option of using different kitchen spaces for cooking or ordering food such as fries and chicken, salad or fish and drinks.

There is also a sports bar and restaurant, a kindergarten and a music and video studio on the site. The Women Empowerment Project is also in the immediate vicinity.

In about 400 m distance you will find a market, shops, bars and restaurants. It is 500 m to the bus station, 5 km to the city center, 5 to 6 km to clubs and gyms and 7 km to the beach and ferry. If you want to discover Mikindani, the historical side of the place, you have to travel about 15 km. The nearest national park (marine park) is about 40 km away. There is the possibility to rent motorbikes or bicycles and to do tours as well as a boat trip with a local sailing boat.

Between 6am and 00pm it is safe to be outside alone. At night you should only travel in groups and take the transport directly to the house.

Volunteer House in Iringa

Our Volunteer House in Iringa has three bedrooms that can accommodate up to six volunteers. The house is also equipped with an inviting living and dining room with sofas and a music system as well as a kitchen. There are two bathrooms with western toilets and showers with running water. The partially covered, huge outdoor terrace with a hang out area is the highlight of the accommodation and an ideal opportunity to spend time there with the other volunteers. WiFi is also available here.

Our RGV team member Shedrack lives in the same house and loves organizing trips, BBQs and game nights for you and the other volunteers.

Host mother Caroline in Arusha

In Arusha you will be accommodated with up to nine other volunteers in the house of our warm host mother Caroline. It is particularly cozy in her living room with a television and a small selection of DVDs. You can relax in her garden with a veranda. There is running water in two bathrooms. Caroline is a passionate cook and would be happy to take you to a gospel choir performance on Sundays.

Caroline will also help you organize excursions - for example to the Serengeti or to the legendary Kilimanjaro. Supermarkets, ATMs and small shops for everyday needs are in the vicinity of your house. Caroline is fluent in English and works for a local non-profit organization.

Guest house in Dar es Salaam

In Dar es Salaam you live with Kelvin's family in a stone house. The building is located in a quiet suburb of Dar es Salaam, in a gated community. In the house there are four bedrooms with mosquito nets and fans; two of the bedrooms are intended for the volunteers. A maximum of five volunteers stay in each of the two bedrooms – separated by gender.

The house also has a large patio with a sofa, a kitchen with a gas cooker and fridge, and a living/dining area with a TV, sofas, dining table, etc. The bathroom has a shower and a French flush toilet. WiFi usually works. In the accommodation you get half board; dinner usually consists of beans, rice and salad.

It is 30 km to the city center, 5 km to the beach and 2 km to the nearest market. There are regular buses to Dar es Salaam and Bagamoyo (cost per trip: around 50 cents). For other trips you can book a 3 Wheeler (Mototaxi).

Location

Dar es Saalam, Arusha, Mtwara, Iringa

Habari! Our locations in Tanzania are as different as our projects are diverse. Big city life in Dar es Salaam, life in a seaside town in Mtwara or with mountain views in Arusha and Iringa? It's your choice!

Dar es Salaam is a bustling city on the coast of the Indian Ocean.
Multicultural and a lively city beach - you will discover this and much more at our project location. The coastal town has developed from a fishing village to a metropolis over the past 100 years. Over 4 million people live in an area roughly twice the size of Berlin. Even today you can still find remnants of bygone times on every corner. Imposing buildings and structures in the city center always take you back to the colonial history of Tanzania.

But you can also feel the international flair everywhere. In hardly any other African city do so many different ethnic groups live together. Accordingly, the culinary selection is also diverse - trying the delicious and spicy street food is therefore an absolute must!

If you would like to immerse yourself in life in an African city, Dar es Salaam is definitely a good idea! Experience the hustle and bustle, explore the different districts and relax comfortably on the beach!

Arusha is located in the north of Tanzania, near the legendary Kilimanjaro. The city is the ideal starting point to explore Africa's highest mountain. The location is also perfect for going on safari. Because you are already very close to the famous Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater is not far away either.

The city and region of Arusha are named after a Maasai people who also live here. Here you can learn a lot about the ethnic groups living in Tanzania and their everyday life. At the numerous colorful markets in Arusha you will not only find culinary delights, but also traditional fabrics, handicrafts and much more.

So if you are keen to explore what Tanzania has to offer besides beaches, then Arusha is a great choice! Both nature and culture enthusiasts will get their money's worth here!

In Iringa, a larger city in the middle of a lush green mountain landscape and surrounded by national parks, you are in the heart of Tanzania. Already on the bus ride there you drive through the middle of the Mikumi National Park and can admire giraffes and elephants in their natural environment from the bus window.

Iringa is located inland on a large rocky plateau. From up here you have a breathtaking view over numerous tobacco and corn fields! The hilly and lush green landscape is ideal for hiking or simply relaxing.

If you would like to combine nature and the city during your stay, then Iringa is a good fit for you! Especially if you prefer mountains to the sea and you can also enjoy a sunset on a rock or over the city.

Mtwara is located in southeastern Tanzania, near the Mozambique border and right on the Indian Ocean coast. Palm trees and natural sandy beaches characterize the image of the likeable port city. Mtwara used to be a small fishing village. Even today, there is fresh fish every day at the port, which you can enjoy while walking around, fried until crispy! You will certainly find your way around here quickly and enjoy the Tanzanian serenity.

Our RGV location in Mtwara was set up together with our volunteers. In addition to a women's aid project and kindergarten, we also built a small amphitheater and a bar with a concert stage in 2020. Mtwara is the place for cultural exchange - meet people from all over the world!

The city is the perfect location if you like spending time on the beach and want to make new friends. The relaxed atmosphere will definitely have an effect on you too! Hakuna Matata!

Your free time at our locations in Tanzania

Tanzania

The country in East Africa is particularly known for its nature and biodiversity. Endless steppes, untouched forests and beautiful sandy beaches characterize the natural landscapes on site and are still home to rare wild animals and indigenous peoples such as the Maasai. Also absolute must-sees: Lake Malawi, the Zanzibar archipelago and Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa.

Your project locations in Tanzania are as diverse as the country itself. Each location offers different ways to spend your free time.

Dar es Salaam

There is hardly any other place where you can get to know life in East Africa as authentically as in the hustle and bustle on the streets and markets of Dar es Salaam. Particularly worth seeing: The largest and most famous market, the Kariakoo. If you need a respite from all the big city hustle and bustle, you should consider a visit to the “city islands” of Mbudya and Bongoyo. The two nature reserves in the Indian Ocean, with their turquoise blue water and white sandy beaches, offer an ideal contrast to the colorful and chaotic metropolis.

Arusha

Arusha is located in northern Tanzania, just 90 kilometers south of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is therefore logical that the city is an important starting point for trekking tours and expeditions to Africa's highest mountain. Numerous wildlife safaris in the neighboring national parks also start and end in the third largest city in the country. For example, in the famous Serengeti National Park, which is known for its lions, elephants and countless other wild animals. Around the city you will also find lakes, rivers and waterfalls that you can visit in your free time.

Mtwara

Mtwara is located in southeastern Tanzania, right on the coast of the Indian Ocean. Surrounded by palm trees and beautiful sandy beaches, you can enjoy the year-round warm weather here in your free time. The coastal town is also a great place to go diving or surfing off the beaten track. In Mtwara itself you will find many lively markets and lively streets. Here you can buy groceries and traditional medicines, admire the architecture of old Indian trading houses or just have a good time with the other local volunteers.

Iringa

In the middle of Tanzania lies the small town of Iringa. Since many aid organizations are involved here and there are two universities, the small town is a kind of gathering place for volunteers and young people of all kinds. The best conditions for making acquaintances and exchanging ideas with exciting people from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds. Iringa is also the starting point for many safaris in the nearby national parks. For example, the Ruaha or Mikumi National Parks offer the best opportunities to observe wild animals such as zebras, cheetahs or hippos.
