Costa Rica animal sanctuary team

What's the matter?

Your volunteer site is a non-profit organization that is not government-supported and has been committed to the welfare of all animals in Costa Rica since 2010.

The aim of the sanctuary is to protect and help endangered animals in Costa Rica. The organization ensures that injured animals recover well in the center.

In the meantime, the sanctuary is mainly a home for some sloths, but also for many monkeys, coatis, kinkajous and a few other animal species. In total, the organization takes care of more than 200 animals through feeding and veterinary care.

Injured animals are often found by locals, tourists or volunteers and taken to the sanctuary to nurse them back up. These are mostly small or young animals that have lost their mother and would not be able to survive on their own. Unfortunately, some animals can no longer be released into the wild even after their medical care and therefore remain in the sanctuary, where the best possible quality of life for the animals is ensured.

In the center, the animals are examined by veterinarians and it is determined how the respective animal can best be helped. Although the care and treatment is mainly in the hands of the permanent staff, volunteers are a great help and, depending on previous experience, are happy to take on some tasks.

Your tasks as a volunteer

Your responsibilities as a volunteer will include preparing food, cleaning and maintaining the enclosures, and crafting and building toys to keep the animals occupied and active.

Your activities will change a little every day to keep your days varied.

Your day begins with breakfast at 7:30 a.m. At around 8:45 a.m. there is a morning meeting with everyone, in which upcoming tasks are clarified and distributed. Your work begins immediately afterwards. This usually includes cleaning up the enclosures by raking and sweeping, and providing the animals with water and food. Every day you take care of different animals and the tasks rotate between the volunteers. Watering the garden is also part of the morning tasks, for example. At around 11 a.m., the animals have to be checked again because they may have knocked over their water bowls.

At 12 noon there is lunch (vegetarian and vegan options possible. Please specify when registering). After the meal you can rest a bit. The volunteers like to go in the pool at this time.

From 13:30 p.m. there will be another team meeting to discuss the tasks. After that, the work begins in the afternoon, which includes the preparation of the feed, similar to that in the morning. In between there are different activities. Most of the animals have to be fed by 16 p.m. Branches must also be collected and placed in the monkey and sloth enclosures, for example, so that they can play with them or eat the leaves.

After the work in the afternoon there is dinner at 18 p.m. Then you have the evening free. We often sit together around the campfire or play community games.

You can also incorporate your personal talents wonderfully into the project. For example, if you are good at crafts, you can help build fences and new enclosures. If, on the other hand, you are more creative, you can support by painting signs or murals. Everyone can also be of great help when it comes to making toys and activities for the animals.

Accommodation Catering

Volunteer house in the sanctuary in Costa Rica

The volunteers sleep in single-sex dormitories on the grounds of the sanctuary. Also on the property is a swimming pool, deck, dining area and full service kitchen (fridge and microwave available for volunteer use).

There are six bunk beds in each of the two dormitories, which means that there is room for up to twelve people in one room. You will be provided with covers and a mosquito net. For the colder months (October-December) you should bring warm sleeping clothes and possibly a blanket (on site you will only receive the cover as a thin blanket). In addition, you should also equip yourself with mosquito spray and take your own towel with you for showering and bathing in the pool.

There are enough toilets and showers with hot water at the dormitories. You can also lock personal items in a locker. Be sure to bring your own lock with you.

All standards are available in the sanctuary, such as electricity, running water and WiFi. The dormitories and bathrooms are cleaned daily. There is also a washing machine.

The employees and volunteers at the sanctuary like to sit together and eat as a group in the dining area. There are a few hammocks in the station where you can relax together. During the lunch breaks, the volunteers often go to the large pool together to cool off.

As the tasks in the project rotate, you'll occasionally have to help the chefs prepare the food. In the project you will receive breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. You can expect a variety of dishes, from traditional dishes of the country to different international foods. You can also get vegetarian dishes. Please inform us in advance about allergies or dietary habits.

Location

San Jose in Costa Rica

San Jose

San José is the capital of Costa Rica and is located in the middle of the country. From here you have the opportunity to drive to all regions of the country within a few hours.

The convenient location means that both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts are a short distance away, as are the cloud forests inland. Around 340.000 people live in San José itself – 1,6 million in the entire metropolitan area. The city sits at 1.170 meters above sea level, giving it pleasant spring-like weather all year round. The temperatures vary only slightly and are around 15 to 26 °C. However, San José also has a rainy season from May to November; the rest of the year it is dry.

For those interested in history, art, architecture, and culture, San Jose is a great place to start a Costa Rican itinerary. But San José is also an excellent starting point for all outdoor and nature enthusiasts, because you will find rainforests, tropical islands and volcanoes nearby. There is so much to discover both in the city itself and in the surrounding area!

Free time in San Jose

Your free time in San José

San José or "Chepe", as Costa Rica's capital is also called, is embedded in the beautiful nature of the country. The city itself offers a variety of sights that you should definitely visit. Buildings in the Spanish colonial style are characteristic and in the historic district of Barrio Amón there are rows of magnificent villas that have been converted into galleries. In other neighborhoods, colorful graffiti adorns the walls of buildings and enlivens the cityscape.

San José is considered the cultural center of Costa Rica: you should definitely not miss the National Theater in the heart of the city. You can take a guided tour there during the day and enjoy excellent performances in the evening. In addition, San José has a high density of museums. For example, visit the National Museum, the Jade Museum or the Gold Museum.

You get a culinary experience when you visit the Mercado Central. Delicious fruit and vegetables, fresh fish, meat and fragrant herbs, spices and coffee beans are piled high in the market hall.

Similar to New York, San José also has a “green lung”. The La Sabana Metropolitan Park invites you to take long walks and you will also find the national stadium there, where football matches are regularly played.

Due to its central location, the capital is an ideal starting point for excursions in the surrounding area. How about a trip to a coffee plantation, for example? After all, Costa Rica is notorious for its excellent coffee. But also the national park around the active volcano Poás with its green lagoons and deep crater lakes is an absolute must-see. For even more action, you can also go whitewater rafting through the jungle or swing through tropical rainforests on cable cars and ziplines.

You can also enjoy the beach and the sea. You even have the choice between the Caribbean and the Pacific: Both coasts can be reached within two to four hours and invite you to relax with their white beaches and palm trees.
