Volunteering at the reforestation project in Iringa

What's the matter?

Tanzania has a lot to offer in terms of landscape. Here you can discover paradisiacal beaches, the impressive Kilimanjaro and endless savannah landscapes! But the so-called Miombo forest is also unique. With its closed canopy, it offers shelter to numerous animals. However, this natural area is increasingly endangered.

Because although most of the land area is protected, Tanzania has to struggle with immense environmental problems such as overgrazing and deforestation. Since there are no property rights to agricultural land, everyone tries to take advantage of the resources of the common land as much as possible. In many places, forests are being cleared indiscriminately in order to use the land for agricultural purposes. Up to 3.500 square kilometers of forest are cut down in this way every year.

You can counteract this problem with your volunteer work in reforestation! Together with the team at your assignment site in Tanzania, you will plant seedlings and distribute trees to the surrounding communities.

Your place of work is a non-profit organization in Iringa, in the center of Tanzania. The reforestation project started in 2012 and was funded by the local church. Trees are grown and cared for in a local tree nursery. When these have reached an appropriate size, they are distributed to the surrounding communities. The trees are then planted in schools, hospitals or parishes, for example. Every year around 200.000 trees are distributed with the help of the project and with the support of volunteers.

The aim of your project work is to support the team at the facility in protecting and preserving the environment in order to counteract climate change. You should also help to convey to the locals how important the issue of environmental protection is for future generations.

Your tasks as a volunteer

Your tasks as a volunteer in the reforestation project are diverse. You actively support the team on site in all work areas. In the tree nursery, for example, you are responsible for soil preparation and processing. You help plant the trees and ensure that the tree seedlings can grow and thrive under good conditions. As soon as they have reached the right size, you distribute the trees to schools, parishes, hospitals or even private individuals. There they are then planted again.

You are also responsible for purchasing new seeds and water supply systems. You can also get involved in controlling and monitoring the reforestation. Your support will educate the population about the need for environmental protection and nature conservation. The team is also happy if you share your existing technical know-how with them.

Your day-to-day work and the associated tasks depend on the season. However, you will have something to do at any time of the year. For example, at the beginning of the year, the soil for the new seedlings is prepared. Your exact working hours will be discussed with you on site. You work a maximum of 40 hours a week.

to the project

What are the project fees used for?

Although we are a non-profit organization, there are costs associated with volunteering abroad. Find out here, why volunteering requires money and what your project fee is used for.

Which visa do I need for Tanzania?

For Tanzania you need a business visa. You can apply for this either online before your trip or directly upon entry at the airport. It is valid for 90 days and costs around €250. If you enter with a tourist visa, you can convert it into a business visa on site.

Participants from Switzerland must have the visa Globetrotter.ch apply for.

For projects in Arusha, a student visa is sufficient, which must be applied for online in advance and is valid for 90 days. This costs around €50, with a possible additional €200 for a work permit.

You will receive all the necessary documents and further information for the application from us after you register.

What language skills do I need for the project in Tanzania?

In order to be able to communicate well with the team on site, you should definitely have knowledge of English. A Swahili course is also recommended.

What vaccinations/ health precautions do I need?

If you are traveling from a yellow fever area, you need a yellow fever vaccination. Otherwise there are no compulsory vaccinations.

We generally recommend a consultation in a practice for travel and tropical medicine.

You can get general information about recommended health care and vaccinations online Center for Travel Medicine as well as on the side of Foreign Office.

What are the requirements for the environmental project?

No special prior knowledge is required to participate. Motivation, good health, the ability to work in a team, fun working outdoors and an interest in environmental issues are important.

What do I have to bring?

Sturdy clothes that can get dirty.

What do I have to consider as an LGBTQ person?

Please be aware that homosexual acts are considered undesirable in many countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America and are even punishable by law in some places. In general, people who are identified as queer are often exposed to hostility.

For example, get information from Foreign Office about the exact regulations in your destination country.
