Tourism internship in Tanzania

What's the matter?

Whether it's a trekking holiday on Kilimanjaro, a safari in the Serengeti or a beach holiday on Zanzibar - Tanzania offers travelers a wide range of attractive holiday destinations and spectacular landscapes. Around 1.000.000 travelers visit the land of the Maasai every year. So off to Tanzania to do your tourism internship!

For example, you can work in a hotel on the main island of Zanzibar or in the metropolis of Dar Es Salaam. There you will learn from local professionals how to deal with international guests. You will gain insights into the service-oriented thinking and acting on site and get to know the different work areas of a hotel in Tanzania. During your internship abroad in the tourism sector, you will acquire valuable intercultural skills, improve your foreign language skills and demonstrate your independence to future employers.

Your internship abroad in the field of tourism

Who is the tourism internship in Tanzania suitable for?

The internship is suitable for anyone who would like to work in the tourism sector or is already in training. An orientation internship is possible without prior knowledge. With previous knowledge - as a trainee or student - a pre- or compulsory internship is possible. Whether for orientation and finding a job or as a practical stay abroad during your training phase - you should be interested in Tanzanian culture and the situation of the local people.

Possible internships and tasks at the tourism internship

You can complete your internship abroad in a hotel or resort in Dar Es Salaam, the largest city in Tanzania, or in a hotel on Zanzibar, Tanzania's "Spice Island". Since your internship serves to gain professional experience, you will gain insight into as many areas of the hotel business as possible, such as:

  • Planning and calculation of trips
  • customer correspondence
  • Accounting (with relevant prior knowledge)
  • Safety Aspects
  • Kitchen and service
  • Front desk and back office

Your tasks as an intern differ, depending on your internship position and your previous knowledge. If you already have knowledge of the travel industry, you can take on more responsible tasks more quickly.

Possibility to recognize your internship abroad in Tanzania

If you would like to have your tourism internship recognized as part of your studies or training, you should definitely find out about the regulations of your university or your training company beforehand. The duration of the mandatory internships varies between 3 - 6 months, some of which require additional work to be written.

Please inform us in advance about the university's templates so that everything can run smoothly. After completion, you will receive a certificate of participation from us in any case.

Your daily work at your tourism internship

Your working hours may vary depending on your internship position, but will not exceed 8 hours per day in a 5-day week. Keep in mind that especially in the tourism industry, weekends can be work-intensive, so your days off can sometimes fall on weekdays. In any case, there is enough time to explore the country together with other interns and volunteers!

Accommodation Catering

Volunteer House in Mtwara

As a volunteer in Mtwara, you will live on a 15.000m² site with various bungalow houses. It depends on the number of volunteers and the time of year where exactly you will be accommodated. Other employees live on the same premises but in different rooms. You can reach your location on foot from all accommodations. WiFi is also available here.

The stone bungalows are equipped with wooden roof terraces and a roof made of bamboo, coconut and metal and are located on small hills in a small village near the city. From the roof terrace you have a great view over the green valley of Mtwara. The accommodation has space for up to 30 volunteers, who are housed separately in the rooms according to gender.

The accommodations have French toilets (no sit-in toilets) and showers with running water, a private fresh water well and a solar powered water pump. You will also find a spring with natural drinking water 100 meters away.

During your time as a volunteer you will receive half board, i.e. breakfast and dinner. You also have the option of using different kitchen spaces for cooking or ordering food such as fries and chicken, salad or fish and drinks.

There is also a sports bar and restaurant, a kindergarten and a music and video studio on the site. The Women Empowerment Project is also in the immediate vicinity.

In about 400 m distance you will find a market, shops, bars and restaurants. It is 500 m to the bus station, 5 km to the city center, 5 to 6 km to clubs and gyms and 7 km to the beach and ferry. If you want to discover Mikindani, the historical side of the place, you have to travel about 15 km. The nearest national park (marine park) is about 40 km away. There is the possibility to rent motorbikes or bicycles and to do tours as well as a boat trip with a local sailing boat.

Between 6am and 00pm it is safe to be outside alone. At night you should only travel in groups and take the transport directly to the house.

Volunteer House in Iringa

Our Volunteer House in Iringa has three bedrooms that can accommodate up to six volunteers. The house is also equipped with an inviting living and dining room with sofas and a music system as well as a kitchen. There are two bathrooms with western toilets and showers with running water. The partially covered, huge outdoor terrace with a hang out area is the highlight of the accommodation and an ideal opportunity to spend time there with the other volunteers. WiFi is also available here.

Our RGV team member Shedrack lives in the same house and loves organizing trips, BBQs and game nights for you and the other volunteers.

In Arusha you will be accommodated with up to nine other volunteers in the house of our warm host mother Caroline. It is particularly cozy in her living room with a television and a small selection of DVDs. You can relax in her garden with a veranda. There is running water in two bathrooms. Caroline is a passionate cook and would be happy to take you to a gospel choir performance on Sundays.

Caroline will also help you organize excursions - for example to the Serengeti or to the legendary Kilimanjaro. Supermarkets, ATMs and small shops for everyday needs are in the vicinity of your house. Caroline is fluent in English and works for a local non-profit organization.

Guest house in Dar es Salaam

In Dar es Salaam you live with Kelvin's family in a stone house. The building is located in a quiet suburb of Dar es Salaam, in a gated community. In the house there are four bedrooms with mosquito nets and fans; two of the bedrooms are intended for the volunteers. A maximum of five volunteers stay in each of the two bedrooms – separated by gender.

The house also has a large patio with a sofa, a kitchen with a gas cooker and fridge, and a living/dining area with a TV, sofas, dining table, etc. The bathroom has a shower and a French flush toilet. WiFi usually works. In the accommodation you get half board; dinner usually consists of beans, rice and salad.

It is 30 km to the city center, 5 km to the beach and 2 km to the nearest market. There are regular buses to Dar es Salaam and Bagamoyo (cost per trip: around 50 cents). For other trips you can book a 3 Wheeler (Mototaxi).
