Tourism internship in Nepal

What's the matter?

Complete your tourism internship in fascinating Nepal and gain valuable professional experience! Tourism is the second most important economic sector in Nepal. Nepal's Himalayan region with Mount Everest is a popular travel destination, especially for outdoor and trekking tourists. But the Nepalese lowlands with its tropical rainforests also attract many international visitors, above all enthusiastic hikers from Europe and pilgrims from India.

If you are studying tourism management or a similar subject, internships are usually expressly desired and are a good opportunity for you to gain professional experience. With an internship abroad, you can also improve your foreign language skills and gain exciting insights into another culture.

Your internship abroad in the field of tourism

For whom is the internship suitable?

You can complete the tourism internship in Nepal during your studies as additional practical experience and as an orientation internship. Accordingly, prior technical knowledge in the tourism or hotel industry or in event management is helpful, but not a prerequisite. If you already have practical experience in tourism, the hotel industry or event management, you can quickly take on responsibility for your own tasks.

Possible internships

You can complete your internship abroad either with a travel agency or in a hotel. The travel agency organizes adventure, cultural and trekking tours for international travelers. Great importance is attached to sustainability. Your tasks depend heavily on your knowledge and interests. For example, you can help with the planning and organization of tours or accompany excursions. You will get to know your host country very well!

If you do your internship in a hotel, you can gain insight into the following areas of work, depending on the place of work:

  • Customer advice: Take on tasks in customer correspondence and get in touch with guests from all over the world!
  • Planning of excursions: Guests can book exciting excursions.
  • Kitchen & Service: Help to take care of the physical well-being of the guests!
  • Front Desk: This is where guests are welcomed.
  • Bookkeeping: If you have previous knowledge, you can help with bookkeeping.
  • Safety aspects: The safety of guests and staff is guaranteed here.

The peak season of Nepal tourism is March/April and October/November, respectively, as low rainfall in spring and snow-free passes in autumn create pleasant travel and hiking conditions.

Possibility to recognize a compulsory internship

If you would like to have your tourism internship recognized as part of your studies or training, you should definitely inform yourself about the regulations of your university or your training company beforehand. Usually there are special requirements regarding the duration and the activities. Some institutions also require written work to be written. Please inform us in advance about the templates from the university/training company so that everything can run smoothly. Regardless of whether you have completed a mandatory or orientation internship - after completing your RGV stay abroad, you will receive a certificate of participation from us.

Your daily work during your tourism internship

Your exact working hours depend on your assignment and will be discussed with you on site. Basically, your working time is a maximum of 40 hours in a 6-day week.

Accommodation Catering

Your possible accommodations in Nepal

In Chitwan: host family or rather in a small hotel?

A maximum of two participants are accepted per host family. Since all host families are in close proximity to each other, all volunteers on site are neighbors in Nepal, so to speak. The houses of our families are very simple, partly built of clay, but clean. Two meals a day are included in your volunteer work or internship abroad (the food usually consists of rice, vegetables, sometimes chicken). You also have the option of being accommodated in a volunteer house or a small hotel.

In Nepal, people don't usually eat breakfast like we're used to. Tea is drunk in the morning and then around 9.00:19.00 a.m. there is a simple meal with rice and vegetables, sometimes with chicken. In the evening around 10:XNUMX p.m., another meal is served, which also consists of rice and vegetables. At noon there is tea. In the school projects, it is possible to buy lunch in the canteen for around XNUMX rupees. Otherwise, most RGV participants eat cookies and fruit they have brought with them for lunch.

You have to wash your laundry yourself or you can hand it over to a hand wash for a fee. We provide you with internet access via a small hotel in the same village. A SIM card can be purchased for your mobile phone - ask our local team for help. It should be noted that electricity is cut off nationwide and periodically for up to 12 hours. Water is only available via a pump and showering/washing is usually done in the open air!

In Kathmandu: In the Guest House

During your assignment in Kathmandu you will be accommodated in the guest house of one of our team members. This is located in the center of Kathmandu and you will be provided with two meals a day from Monday to Friday. From here you can easily reach everything you need - restaurants and shops with utensils for everyday use to numerous shops with souvenirs for your friends and family at home. The tourist center of Kathmandu is not far from your accommodation, so you can easily walk there. There you will meet people from all over the world and you can feast your way around the globe in the lively pubs and restaurants.

Location

Kathmandu, Chitwan, Pokhara

Nepal is a country of superlatives! In the small Asian state, much of the Himalayas are home to the world's highest mountain, Mount Everest (8848 meters) and seven other eight-thousanders.

But Nepal has much more to offer than these snow-capped giants! More than 60 ethnic groups with many different traditions and religious customs live in Nepal. The old royal cities of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur are also well worth seeing.

No matter where you are in the country - there are exciting things to discover everywhere!

Kathmandu,

Located in the center of the country, Kathmandu has been described in mystical Hindu and Buddhist legends dating back thousands of years. However, the capital is not only a cultural center, but also a political one: embassies of many countries and organizations for development aid are based in Kathmandu. The cityscape is characterized by tall buildings in a metropolitan style. The traditional old town, on the other hand, is peppered with Hindu temples and other religious buildings. You will also find many traditional shops with numerous spices, carvings and fabrics in the dreamy alleys of the old town!

If you want to experience colorful lights, historic temples and the breathtaking panorama of the Himalayas and immerse yourself completely in this fascinating world, Kathmandu is the place for you!

Chitwan,

Chitwan National Park is located in southern Nepal, in the foothills of the Himalayas, bordering India. The park itself stretches over an incredible 932 square kilometers! Animal species that live here include rhinos, leopards, bears and the 'king of the jungle': the Bengal tiger. Within Chitwan there are also a variety of resorts where you can not only stay, but also go on exciting safaris.

Nature lovers and animal lovers will never get bored here! If you also want to get to know village life in Nepal, you've come to the right place!

Pokhara

Our project site, Pokhara, is about 200 km west of Nepal's capital, Kathmandu. With around 313.000 inhabitants, it is Nepal's second largest city. Pokhara stretches from Phewa Lake to the foot of the mighty Annapurna massif and has a lot to offer in terms of landscape. From the higher points of the city one has a breathtaking view of the mountain range, whose image is characterized by the sacred Mt. Machhapuchhre.

Hiking enthusiasts in particular will certainly feel at home here, so close to the mountains! Pokhara has a lot to offer for outdoor fans!

Kathmandu, Chitwan and Pokhara

Your free time in Kathmandu, Chitwan or Pokhara

Kathmandu,

Kathmandu is an exciting city with a lot to discover. As part of the hippie trail, the Nepalese capital is a popular destination for hippies, but also for tourists from all over the world. You will feel this especially in the Thamel district. The district is considered the tourist hub of the city with its large number of restaurants and bars that invite you to linger.

It gets historical at Durbar Square. Here are the impressive Royal Palace and more than 50 pagodas, stupas, temples and palaces. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is not only popular with tourists, but many locals also like to spend time there.

You can find a similar place in Lalitpur, the city of beauty. The city is right next to Kathmandu and, in addition to Durbar Square, is particularly enchanting with its golden temple and the Buddhist cityscape.

Chitwan,

When in Chitwan, a variety of leisure activities await you, such as excursions in the national park, trekking tours and safaris through the Nepalese jungle. With a bit of luck you can spot native animals such as rhinos, leopards, bears, Bengal cats, jackals, foxes, honey badgers, mongooses, snakes, monitor lizards and the infamous Bengal tiger.

If you are interested in birds, then a bird watching tour is for you. It is best to inquire at the park's department. There you can book various tours and offers.

Pokhara

For those interested in culture, Pokhara offers a visit to the many temples, monasteries and museums, such as the "International Mountain Museum". But especially for nature lovers there is a lot to see in the vicinity. Take a stroll along Phewa Lake or rent a boat to explore the lake.

The climb up the smaller Mt. Sarangkot is worth it for the view alone. From here you can enjoy the view of the Pokhara Valley, Phewa Lake and of course parts of the Himalayas. In your free time, it is also recommended to visit the nearby caves, such as the sacred Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave and visit the impressive Devi's Fall waterfall.
