Volunteer work in wildlife conservation

What's the matter?

Endangered animal species worldwide depend on the help and protection of motivated animal rights activists. In Thailand, too, greed, corruption and a low level of education are the causes of an increase in the so-called “empty forests”.

Illegal hunting and the lucrative trade in wild animals are prosecuted, but not as consistently as is actually necessary. In Thailand there is a lack of awareness of the need to preserve plants, biotopes and their role as a habitat for wild animals. At our volunteer site in Thailand, you have the opportunity to actively help protect endangered species and to support the team in educating the population!

Your place of work is a foundation that supports endangered and endangered wild animals. This was founded in 2001 and today has a facility of more than seven hectares. As a sanctuary for mistreated and neglected wild animals, the facility primarily takes care of sick and weak animals. These include, for example, wild animals that have been exploited in the tourism industry and others that have been kept as pets for years. For example, a crocodile lives in the complex, which has become too big for its former owner to keep as a pet. Or two elephants that have been offered as a tourist attraction for years. In addition, monkeys, bears, birds, pigs, lizards and other animal species live in the sanctuary.

As soon as the animals are healthy again, they are – as far as possible – released back into the wild. If this is not possible, the animals in the facility can also be cared for in the long term. Some wild animals are born at the facility and spend their entire lives there. For the majority of the animals, a life in freedom is unfortunately no longer possible, which is why the facility depends on animal-loving volunteers and professional help. In addition, the foundation team is involved in educational work among the population, with children being the main target group.

Important note: In order to enable their release into the wild, the animals should not be accustomed to humans. Therefore, close contact with wild animals (e.g. petting them) is not allowed.

Your tasks as a volunteer

As a volunteer, you will first find out everything that is important and worth knowing about the care and husbandry of the wild animals that live there. The team at the site attaches great importance to ensuring that the living conditions of the wild animals correspond to their natural environment. The ultimate goal is to rehabilitate the animals and, if possible, release them back into the wild.

Feeding the animals is one of your main tasks. This is more challenging and creative than you might think. Because an attempt is made not just to put the food out for the animals, but to place it where the animals would look for it in the wild. For example, monkeys have to pick their own food; Elephants sometimes find their food in bamboo tubes or in nets that are attached high up in the treetops. As a volunteer, you also help with the procurement and preparation of the feed. This means that you harvest fruits for the animals, buy feed and prepare the food in the "animal kitchen" according to the species.

You will also work as an animal keeper and help to clean the animal enclosures and dwellings. Depending on the animal species, this is not so easy, because locks and various tricks have to be used. Monkeys and bears in particular are very dangerous and have to be guided out of the enclosure before they can be cleaned.

The team also makes the greatest effort when it comes to reintroduction. For example, monkeys are released in pairs. For this purpose, they are first released on a trial basis on the islands off the coast of Thailand. There it is observed whether the animals can cope on their own. The sea acts as a natural boundary, making it easy to spot and recapture.

You will also support the team in maintaining the facility. Here it depends on your physical fitness, because you work hard and there is an incredible amount to do. Keeping your own accommodation clean and small household chores are also part of your area of responsibility.

Accommodation Catering

Accommodation in Thailand

With several participants you will live in a house with shared rooms on the premises. You share a bathroom together that only has cold water. The first thing you notice about the main house is the large terrace. There is a large table there where you can eat and spend time with the other volunteers. The terrace also invites you to relax and sunbathe. In the main house there is also a kitchen where lunch and dinner are prepared. Various foods are available there for your breakfast.

When you move in, the cleaning staff will come to clean the rooms. Afterwards, you and your roommates are responsible for the cleanliness. There are enough sockets in the bedrooms and you can use WiFi in the elephant kitchen.

Near your location you have the opportunity to buy or rent a moped and explore the area with it.

In the wildlife project in Thailand is Katie find main contact. She is the office coordinator and has an overview of the progress of the project. Katie comes from Great Britain and as a former volunteer supports the volunteers in their tasks. But Katie is not alone in the office: Ban the cat is always checking on things in the office.

Fang is an elephant coordinator. She is from Thailand and speaks fluent English as well as Thai. So she can communicate with the Thai employees and the volunteers without any problems.

Billy is also an elephant coordinator. He is Thai but has also lived in the UK for some time and is fluent in English. Billy is very friendly and helpful. If Katie is not available, the volunteers can also contact Billy with any questions or problems.

Anna is Wildlife Coordinator. She originally came to the project as a volunteer. In addition to her mother tongue German, Anna also speaks English, Spanish, Korean and is now learning Thai. Like the other team members, she is very popular with the volunteers. As a contact person, she is happy to assist the volunteers with questions and problems.

Banana is Wildlife Coordinator and native Thai. Actually her name is Anna - like her German colleague. To avoid misunderstandings, it is called in the project Banana or Pumba. Banana speaks Thai as well as English. She is just as gracious as everyone else in the team. And her heart beats especially for the animals in the project.
