Volunteer-in-Meditation Center

What's the matter?

The ashram is located on a two and a half hectare organic farm in Northeast Thailand. International teachers, employees and volunteers live there all year round. Some dogs, cats and about 30 chickens are also at home on the farm.

A variety of courses on the topics of sustainability and ecology take place in the training center. Among other things, "Deep Ecology", "Permaculture Design", "Natural Building" and "Ecovillage Design" are taught.

Deep Ecology is a "green" philosophy that goes well beyond environmental protection with its commitment to sustainable living. You, as a volunteer, are also cordially invited to take part in the courses. We will be happy to inform you about the dates of the individual courses during your consultation.

The Corona Pandemic has severely affected this project, as neither guests nor volunteers are accepted and as a result hardly any income could be generated. In order to further promote sustainability and climate protection, the site has decided to switch to alternative technologies in the near future as soon as the financial means are available. Thus, it is planned to implement better water management, implement optimized agriculture, switch to solar energy and biogas systems and cook on rocket stoves in the future.

The meditation center aims to support people in (re)establishing a spiritual relationship with nature. Through their educational work, they hope for a future in which people live in harmony with nature and all other living beings. As a volunteer, you too can help to realize this philosophy and actively implement it in the center!

Your personal goal as a volunteer at the Ashram is to develop a deep understanding of our connection to Mother Earth and all of her inhabitants, and to learn how to treat nature with care and love. In addition, the Ashram wants to inspire and inspire people with practical and sustainable methods to achieve a sustainable future and thus counteract climate change. Become part of this vision as an Ashram Volunteer in Thailand!

Your tasks as a volunteer

Unfortunately, no more volunteers can be accepted in the period from April 01st to May 31st, 2024.

As a volunteer at the Ashram in Thailand you can work in many areas. The daily household chores in the center are done collectively in a rotating system. The main household chores consist of cooking, washing dishes and composting.

In addition, the volunteers get involved

  • in the care of the orchard,
  • the harvest of the planted vegetables,
  • watering the gardens,
  • planting seedlings and
  • many other tasks that arise on the farm.

You can also get involved as a volunteer in the production of natural products such as jam, shampoos and mosquito sprays. You can also help with natural house building and the production of natural building materials, such as mud bricks and paint for painting.

In addition, help is needed to teach the children on site, as there are too few teachers here, and they often do not have sufficient knowledge of English. Furthermore, the schools in the area often lack good teaching materials. An elementary task of the employees of the ashram is the care and teaching of the children.

Furthermore, the turtles in Thailand suffer greatly from the effects of climate change. The Ashram project is therefore also increasingly concerned with the preservation of the animals by counting them regularly and collecting garbage.

There is always a need for help with the administration of the Ashram in the areas of marketing, social media, accounting and maintaining the website, which you can assist with if required.

In summary, your area of responsibility can consist of the following activities:

  • gardening
  • Natural house construction
  • Forest and agricultural care
  • Support in the implementation of alternative technologies
  • Production of natural products (soaps, shampoos, mosquito repellent spray etc.)
  • Children's programme
  • Protection and conservation of turtles
  • Tasks in the administration of the Ashram

Depending on how long you work at the Ashram, you will usually help in a number of different areas for the first four weeks in order to find out what work you enjoy the most. After that, you have the opportunity to commit to a few projects within the Ashram. You are also welcome to propose and implement your own projects.

The daily routine at the center follows a routine that has proven itself, a Finding a balance between work and contemplative elements. This way you always have time between the work units for yoga, meditation dance, non-violent communication practice and sufficient free time for personal disposal.

The day at the ashram starts early in the morning at 5:45 am with an optional group meditation and a yoga class from 6:15 am. Afterwards, from about 7:00 to 8:30 a.m., breakfast is prepared and eaten together as a team.

From 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. you will work on different tasks in the project, depending on what is pending. After the lunch break you can, if you wish, take part in deep relaxation and relax for half an hour.

From 15:00 p.m. to 17:00 p.m. we continue to work on different tasks. At 18:00 p.m., the day will be rounded off with another optional meditation. From 19:00 to 20:00 there is dinner prepared by a chef. There are often a few joint activities afterwards, such as workshops and lectures on sustainability, in which you are welcome to get involved yourself.

Accommodation Catering

Volunteer House at the Ashram in Thailand

Accommodation at the ashram is simple but comfortable. Up to eight volunteers are accommodated in the dormitory. Each bed has electricity, shelves, a fan, mosquito net and bedding. In addition, the bedroom is separated by gender.

A total of four composting toilets are used in the ashram, which are emptied daily and kept odorless with sawdust. The compost is used as fertilizer for the garden. Two of the toilets work with dry composting and two with vermi-composting.

The showers are simple bamboo cabins, are outdoors and have cold water only. Please note that only natural shampoos and soaps may be used as the water seeps directly into the ground. Natural hygiene products are also available at the Ashram Shop. So you don't necessarily have to bring them with you from home.

Linen can be hand washed or given to Om's sister in law Gig who offers a cheap laundry service.

In the ashram there is also a hall where we eat together and where community activities or workshops take place. The ashram also has a small cafe that is open three days a week. There you can buy food and drinks, mostly from rural areas, as well as the ashram's own products. Sometimes there are also delicious desserts and coffee.

Single room in the ashram in Thailand

If you want a little more privacy, you also have the option - for an extra charge - to rent a single room. If there are two or more people taking part in the project, there is the option of booking a double room.

There are a total of six smaller single rooms and three double rooms in the ashram, which can accommodate up to four people and are therefore also suitable for a small family. Fans, mosquito nets and bedding are provided in these rooms.

Please let us know your preferred accommodation when registering.

Location

Nong Khai in Thailand

Nong Khai

Our project location in northern Thailand is in Isaan, which is hardly developed for tourism, not far from the Laos border. Nong Khai, the provincial capital of the same name, is about 40 minutes away and the capital of Laos, Vientiane, is only 20 km away.

In Isaan, a very individual way of life has developed from the mix of Thai and Laotian influences. This area is especially known for the warmth, friendliness and helpfulness of its residents. Let yourself be enchanted and infected! The Isaan dialect, which is predominantly spoken in the region, also developed from a mixture of Thai and Lao.

Here in Nong Khai you are surrounded by beautiful landscapes. In the rainy season, the whole area shines in the bright green of the rice fields.

If you want to deal intensively with nature and the topic of sustainability, you will definitely have very special and valuable experiences here!

Free time in Nong Khai, Thailand

Your free time in Nong Khai

After the work is done, you have plenty of opportunities to relax and spend your free time in a variety of ways.

Due to the remote location, the deployment site is the perfect place to just switch off, unwind and let yourself be infected by the serenity of the residents. Use the time to practice music and yoga with the other volunteers or practice your meditation skills and become one with the idyllic nature and the green of the rice fields.

In addition to excursions to the surrounding villages and lakes, a visit to the city of Nong Khai on the banks of the mighty Mekong is definitely worthwhile. Stroll along the river promenade, work your way through culinary delicacies at the night market and visit the many sights of the city, which is characterized by Laotian, Vietnamese, Chinese and, last but not least, French influences. Especially recommended and an absolute must is the Sala Kaeo Ku Park, which amazes its visitors with imposing statues inspired by Buddhist and Hindu mysticism.

At least as exciting and worthwhile is a trip to nearby Vientiane, the capital of Laos, where you not only have the chance to feel the big city underfoot, but also the opportunity to gain insights into the culture of one of the last communist countries to get the world.

On-site procedure

Arrive at the Ashram in Thailand

Arrival in Thailand

You have various options for your journey: you can either fly to Vientiane in Laos and from there travel on to the project site, or you can fly to Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. The easiest way is to take a domestic flight to Udon Thani from Bangkok. But you can also take a night train from Bangkok and get off at the last stop where your project location is. The night trains are comfortable and clean in both first and second class and offer fold-out beds. We will advise you on the best option for you when registering!

From the airport in Udon Thani you can either use the transfer service (included in the services) or you can travel independently to the project location. You can also have a team member pick you up from the train station at no extra charge. When you arrive, you will be warmly welcomed by our team leaders and introduced to local life.

Orientation program at the Ashram

Orientation program in Thailand

Upon arrival at the ashram, you will be greeted by the two founders of the center, Tom and Om Sunisa. They will show you everything you need to know about the day-to-day running of the project and give you a short tour of the ashram. During this opportunity you will also get to know the other volunteers and team members. The work and your tasks will be clarified in detail later. You will also be familiarized with the house rules, the daily routine and general organization on the first day.

During an experience week, you will then be slowly introduced to life in an ecovillage as you get used to the lifestyle of living together in an ecovillage community. Through these seven days you will have the opportunity to delve deeper into the project and also get a better understanding of the different areas of the ashram. During the experience week, theoretical sessions are combined with practical activities. Topics include Ecovillage Design, Permaculture, Gardening Practices, Natural Building and Natural Product Manufacturing.

Volunteer at the Ashram in Thailand

Nong Khai Team
site

Your team at the Ashram consists of Om and Tom , the founders of the project. Om is your main contact. She is from the village of Ban Suai Long, five minutes from the ashram. Om lived for eight years in an education center for simple living, spiritual practice and social activism in central Thailand, where she trained to become a teacher. Among other things, she teaches courses in Ecovillage Design and Engaged Buddhism. Her deep connection to nature inspired her to start the ashram with her husband Tom to offer more people a way back to nature and to themselves.

Tom is originally from Holland and has worked as a volunteer on various organic farms in Europe for many years. He has been involved in the Global Ecovillage Network since taking an Ecovillage Design course in 2007. Tom devotes much of his time and ecological knowledge to actively regenerating the earth and passing this enthusiasm on to young people. For this purpose he founded the ashram in northern Thailand in 2012 together with his wife Om.
