Horse Project Tanzania

What's the matter?

If you are looking for an impressive travel destination, you are in the right place in Tanzania. Unfortunately, the country also has a downside. In particular, the work situation in the rural areas of Tanzania shows grievances. Once upon a time, most of the population worked in agriculture and farming. However, due to the low yields, most farm hands have migrated to the city, where the chances of better pay are significantly higher.

In addition, there is generally a great need to catch up in the introduction of sustainable and environmentally friendly methods in the agricultural sector. Our locations in Iringa want to set a good example, which is why they work in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way.

These are horse farms located just outside of town. There are between 30 and 40 horses, numerous goats, cows, chickens, sheep, ducks etc. at home. There are even camels and buffaloes on one of the farms. Classic farming is also practiced on the farms. Fruits and vegetables are grown for people and animals - so there is a lot to do! In addition to conventional electricity, solar and wind energy is also used for the supply.

Your tasks as a volunteer

Due to the wide range of offers, your tasks can be tailored to you personally. For example, you can focus entirely on the farm's horses. This includes caring for, feeding and training the animals. By arrangement, you can also go on rides with them and generally make sure that the horses get enough exercise.

If you want, you can also take care of the other farm animals or get involved in gardening: from tomatoes to spinach to watermelons - all of this is grown on the farm.

Tasks in administration, manual work or help in the kitchen can also arise during your project work. For volunteers with previous knowledge or trainees in a relevant area (agricultural sciences, veterinary medicine, etc.), there are also a wide range of possible assignments: on the farms in Iringa, animal keepers or veterinary medicine students can join the local veterinarians. They visit the farm regularly. This is a great opportunity to exchange ideas with like-minded people.

You usually work from Monday to Friday; your working day starts around 8 a.m. You usually ride the horses out in the morning and evening; in the afternoon other activities are waiting for you. You eat lunch with your colleagues on the farm. Closing time is usually at 17:30 p.m. If you like, you can also lend a hand at the weekend.

Accommodation Catering

Horse farm and agriculture accommodation in Iringa

At the Horses Project in Iringa, you can either sleep in the Student House in Iringa or directly on the farm. At the Student House, you share a room with some other volunteers, and on the farm you are usually accommodated with at most one other volunteer.

The Student House is centrally located in Iringa, while the farm is located in the countryside a good distance from the city. If you choose the Student House, you also have to drive from your accommodation to your job site for about an hour each day.

Optionally, you can also spend the week at the farm and drive to the Student House on the weekend, from where you can start your free time program

Location

Iringa

In Iringa, a larger city in the middle of a lush green mountain landscape and surrounded by national parks, you are in the heart of Tanzania. Already on the bus ride there you drive through the middle of the Mikumi National Park and can admire giraffes and elephants in their natural environment from the bus window.

Iringa is located inland on a large rocky plateau. From up here you have a breathtaking view over numerous tobacco and corn fields! The hilly and lush green landscape is ideal for hiking or simply relaxing.

If you would like to combine nature and the city during your stay, then Iringa is a good fit for you! Especially if you prefer mountains to the sea and you can also enjoy a sunset on a rock or over the city.

RGV FAQ
to the project

What are the project fees used for?

Although we are a non-profit organization, there are costs associated with volunteering abroad. Find out here, why volunteering requires money and what your project fee is used for.

Which visa do I need for Tanzania?

For Tanzania you need a business visa. You can apply for this either online before your trip or directly upon entry at the airport. It is valid for 90 days and costs around €250. If you enter with a tourist visa, you can convert it into a business visa on site.

Participants from Switzerland must have the visa Globetrotter.ch apply for.

For projects in Arusha, a student visa is sufficient, which must be applied for online in advance and is valid for 90 days. This costs around €50, with a possible additional €200 for a work permit.

You will receive all the necessary documents and further information for the application from us after you register.

What language skills do I need for the project in Tanzania?

In order to be able to communicate well with the team on site, you should definitely have knowledge of English. A Swahili course is also recommended.

What vaccinations/ health precautions do I need?

If you are traveling from a yellow fever area, you need a yellow fever vaccination. Otherwise there are no compulsory vaccinations.

We generally recommend a consultation in a practice for travel and tropical medicine.

You can get general information about recommended health care and vaccinations online Center for Travel Medicine as well as on the side of Foreign Office.

What are the requirements for the project?

If you already have experience with horses, that is advantageous for the project. Most importantly, interest in farm work in general, a proactive approach to work, willingness to learn and creativity.

What do I have to bring?

Work clothes that can get dirty and at least cover your arms and knees.

What do I have to consider as an LGBTQ person?

Please be aware that homosexual acts are considered undesirable in many countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America and are even punishable by law in some places. In general, people who are identified as queer are often exposed to hostility.

For example, get information from Foreign Office about the exact regulations in your destination country.
