Medical Volunteer in Mtwara

What's the matter?

Do you care about the health and well-being of other people? This is probably also the reason why you decided to study or train in the medical field. In Tanzania you have the opportunity to get an insight into the local healthcare system by volunteering in a clinic or hospital.

With the help of volunteers, the lack of staff at the Tanzanian hospitals can be compensated for and better patient care can be guaranteed. In addition to the lack of staff, the health system in Tanzania is not adequately equipped financially. The government only supports the health care system in a few areas. For example, in the cheap dispensing of malaria medication or in the free dispensing of HIV medication.

The lack of financial support from the Tanzanian government for hospitals means that many churches and non-profit organizations are opening private clinics to meet the need. However, specialists can usually only be found in the larger state hospitals, which are often extremely overloaded. This leads to extremely long waiting times for the patients.

When you volunteer in the medical field in Tanzania, you can get involved in various institutions. There are big differences between private and state hospitals or clinics. In state hospitals, patients sometimes wait more than a day to be treated. The rush is so big because the treatments here are cheap. However, the patients still have to pay for the medication themselves. Hygienic standards in state hospitals are also generally suboptimal.

The private hospitals, on the other hand, can be compared with the European standards. The hospital rooms are well-kept and sufficient medication is available. However, the treatments here are very expensive and therefore only an option for patients with sufficient financial means. This also means that these hospitals or clinics are a lot quieter and far fewer patients are being treated.

Your tasks as a volunteer

The local doctors and nurses speak English differently, depending on whether they have attended an English-speaking school or not. However, about 90% of the patients do not speak English. So a Swahili course is highly recommended to get the most out of your volunteer work.

Depending on your previous knowledge, you will assist the doctors and nurses where necessary. Depending on your medical experience and skills, you will be assigned different areas of responsibility in which you can provide meaningful support to the local staff.

There are many different ways of getting actively involved in the hospital, and they depend on your qualifications, your interests, and the changing needs on site. In general, working in the areas of emergency room (care for the injured), internal medicine (care of patients, help with diagnosis), obstetrics (if necessary, help with births and aftercare), laboratory (blood and stool tests), as well as shadowing or Assistance with minor operations possible. You can decide for yourself whether you prefer to specialize in one area or become active across wards.

There will always be times when there is not much to do. Use this time to pester doctors and nurses with questions so that you can learn as much as possible about tropical diseases and local therapies.

The hospital is open every day and works in shifts. As a volunteer, however, you have fixed working hours from Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 16:00 p.m. Your day-to-day work can be very different depending on the ward you are assigned to. In between you have an hour break.
