Street dogs in Cusco

What's the matter?

The animal shelter, which has existed for 25 years, is a non-profit organization and therefore receives no state aid. The home describes itself as a hotel for dogs and cats, because the animals can really be pampered here. The shelter has no permanent staff, it is managed by the owner and two volunteers support him. For this reason, support from volunteers is very welcome!

Before the animals came here, they lived neglected on the streets or were subjected to abuse. At the shelter, they can regain their strength and spend their lives in a safe and comfortable place. They are taken for walks every day, receive freshly prepared meals and medical care and can live in hygienic conditions. About 90 dogs, 35 cats and a horse are housed at the facility until they find new, caring families to take care of them.

Sterilization is also a big issue to avoid overpopulation. The animals would also have to be vaccinated against rabies and dewormed. Specialists are needed for this.

The project was founded by a group of students who wanted to give animals a life in dignity. In addition to taking care of the animals on a daily basis, they are also interested in campaigning to create a friendlier world for dogs. They carry out educational work in schools and in neighborhoods, look for adoptive families and take care of the sterilization of street dogs so that no puppies have to grow up defenseless on the streets of Cusco.

Your tasks as a volunteer

The following activities await you in the project:

  • Preparation of feed for the animals
  • Feeding the animals
  • Help with bathing
  • Assisting the organization with campaigns in the community

The team is always looking for volunteers who will make time for the dogs. Give them your full attention, play with them and take them for walks. In addition, there are tasks such as accompanying the team when shopping, preparing the food and keeping the facility clean.

You usually work with one or two other people in one shift. Your working hours are - in consultation with the project management - usually Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 13:00 p.m. You are free in the afternoons. Occasionally you may be asked to help out at the weekend.

Participation in the project does not require any special previous experience. However, you should be used to dealing with dogs and cats. It is important that you do your utmost for the animals. Please be aware that some of the dogs may be in poor condition and need special care. Working with dogs can be physically demanding. Bring clothes that can get dirty.

In order to communicate with the team, you need a basic knowledge of Spanish. A one-week language course is included in the program for this purpose. Proof of rabies vaccination is mandatory in this project.

Location

Cusco

The Andean city of Cusco is famous for its checkered history and its close proximity to the Inca city of Machu Picchu. The ruined city is about 75 kilometers northwest of Cusco.

In Peru's constitution, Cusco is even mentioned as "Capital histórica" (historical capital). Around 3400 residents live here at 430.000 meters above sea level in a predominantly dry and mild climate.

Cusco was the capital of the Incas until the Spanish Inquisition. In and around the city you will find numerous relics and remains of this culture. The inner city, however, is characterized by the architectural style of the Spanish colonial masters. This interesting mix makes Cusco and its architecture very exciting to discover. It is not for nothing that the city has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983.

If you are interested in history, you can learn and discover a lot here. You can also brush up on your Spanish skills in Cusco while experiencing everyday life in the city. For those who like to go hiking, the mountainous surrounding area is of course ideal for various tours.

Free time in Cusco

Your free time in Cusco

Cusco is located in the middle of the Andes and is considered one of the most important tourist destinations in Peru. The former capital of the Incas has a lot to offer, especially culturally, but also in terms of landscape.

On your days off, you'll have enough time to explore Cusco or maybe even plan a trip outside of the city. In the historic city center you will find numerous attractions such as the Plaza de las Armas and you can admire important city buildings such as the cathedral and the Templo de la Compañía de Jesús. Other magnificent buildings, including the palace of the Inca ruler Inca Roca, are on Calle Hatun Rumiyuq. The busy street takes you to the Barrio de San Blas district. There you can go on a discovery tour in the narrow and steep alleys leading up and discover great craftsmanship. Also worth seeing is the Inca temple Coricancha, which means “golden temple”.

Cusco is the starting point for tours to Machu Picchu. You should definitely not miss a visit to the ruined city, 75 kilometers away. Either you take the Inca Rail to the ruined city or you hike there if you are experienced and you dare a two-day tour. In terms of scenery, the hike is definitely worth it!

Another absolute highlight is the Sacred Valley of the Incas with its many tourist attractions. Two different routes - one to the east and one to the west - lead into the valley and will absolutely fascinate you with the landscape.

A little further away with a three-hour drive, but absolutely worth seeing is Vinicunta, the so-called Rainbow Mountain. You should not miss this unique natural spectacle. Once there, you still have to hike about 15 kilometers before you can admire Rainbow Mountain in all its glory.
