Volunteer work in animal and environmental protection in Nepal

What's the matter?

Many animal species in Nepal are severely threatened by illegal poaching, deforestation of the rainforests and pollution of the environment. Few monitored wildlife sanctuaries provide a sanctuary for these animals. The facility you can support is located in one such forested area in Nepal.

As a volunteer you can support the organization in its project to preserve rare animal species. In this way you help to preserve the endangered animals of Nepal and to save them from extinction.

As a volunteer, you support an organization that was founded by committed volunteers. Her concern was to restore a forest area in Dhanusha, near the municipality of Dhanushadham, which had been almost destroyed by illegal hunting and farming. Since then, the situation has improved significantly: Thanks to thousands of newly planted trees and newly released animals, the protected area has almost completely recovered.

Much work remains to be done in controlling the forest and wild population, rescuing and conserving rare species, and educating the population. Here you can lend a hand as a volunteer and do your part to preserve Nepal's nature.

Your tasks as a volunteer

You can take on a variety of tasks as a volunteer in the wildlife project in Nepal. You can support the team in releasing confiscated or endangered animals to an area that is safe for them. You'll also help monitor species populations by setting up trail cameras, analyzing wildlife photos, and entering the collected data into lists. In this way, the wild population is monitored.

You can also get involved in raising awareness about animal welfare. For one, you can create posts for social media and help keep the site up to date. On the other hand, you can do educational work in the surrounding schools, for example by leading a lecture on the importance of environmental protection and animal welfare.

Your working hours depend on the work currently being done and the number of helpers in the project. In general, you work from around 9:00 in the morning to 17:00 in the afternoon. In between you have an hour break where you get your lunch.

Accommodation Catering

Volunteer hut or tent

Depending on availability, you can choose between two different types of accommodation. You can either stay in a volunteer hut or sleep in a tent. All sleeping accommodations are located directly on the premises of the deployment site. Western toilets and showers are available in the permanent accommodation, in the tent you have to use bucket showers. A kitchen, a terrace for relaxing in the evening and a WiFi connection are also available for all volunteers.

Location

Dhanusadham

During your volunteer work as a wildlife volunteer in Nepal, you will live in the Dhanusha district in the south of the country. The site is located in Dhanushadham, about 45 minutes from Janakpur, the district capital. The community is religious and a major pilgrimage site for Hindus from around the world.

Dhanushadham is located in the fertile Terai Plain, which stretches along the border between Nepal and India. The Terai is the warmest and wettest area in Nepal. This means that the soil in the lowlands, which are characterized by elephant grass and dense rainforest, is very fertile and more than half of the agricultural area is in the Terai.

Overall, the Dhanusha district is rich in nature and culture. Many species of animals live here, such as rhinos, elephants, various monkeys and reptiles, some of which have become very rare. Dhanusha is also home to important religious sites: part of the bow of the Hindu deity Shiva is said to be kept in Dhanushadham.

As a nature and animal lover, you are in good hands here. If you also show respect and interest in the local religion and customs, you will surely be welcomed by the community with open arms!

Free time in Dhanushadham, Nepal

Your free time in Dhanushadham

Dhanushadham looks back on a very young history. The city was created in 2014 after a merger of several localities. The best way to spend your free time here is in nature, because the place is embedded in a beautiful, picturesque landscape. Lush green elephant grass and dense jungle dominate the image of the Terai lowlands in which the city is located. With a bit of luck you can spot native animal species such as rhinos, elephants, various species of monkeys and reptiles such as turtles and lizards.

The religious sites in and around Dhanushadham are particularly important and worth seeing. Part of the bow of the Hindu deity Shiva is said to be kept here. That is why there are numerous Hindu temples here and you can take part in various festivals and ceremonies during your time as a volunteer.

In addition to your stay in Dhanushadham, a trip to Janakpur is also worthwhile. The city's highlight is the Janaki Mandir, a temple dedicated to the Hindu deity Sita. You will be amazed at the sight of this huge temple, made of white marble and decorated with bright colors.

A unique picture is offered to you at the train station of Janakpur. The special feature: It is the only train station in the whole of Nepal, and that is reflected in the number of passengers. Hundreds of passengers sit in the carriage and on the roof of the train when it pulls into the station.
