Voluntary work in physiotherapy in Namibia

What's the matter?

In Namibia, the healthcare system suffers from a severe lack of financial resources. There is also a lack of medical staff. Above all, specialists such as physiotherapists or occupational therapists are only rarely represented. Due to the large area of the country, some of which is sparsely populated, there is generally insufficient medical care in many public hospitals in Namibia. Physical or mental impairments are rarely treated because a large part of the population does not have access to appropriate facilities.

Support Namibian professionals with your volunteer work in physiotherapy or occupational therapy! With appropriate training, do volunteer work ("Skills-based Volunteering") in the field of physiotherapy or occupational therapy and enrich the on-site staff through your daily exchange of knowledge!

As a volunteer you will work in a Namibian hospital with patients who are being treated for nerve damage, physical disabilities or injuries. With the help of the therapies and measures, their impairments and symptoms should be reduced. Your quality of life should thus be increased. Our locations are all located in Namibia's capital, Windhoek.

Your tasks as a volunteer

In the first few days of your volunteer work in the physiotherapy or occupational therapy department of a hospital, you will accompany the on-site specialists. You get to know the patients and get an insight into the treatment methods there. Depending on your previous knowledge and the duration of your stay abroad, you can support the local staff and assist with various tasks.

Your area of activity includes exercises to promote muscle development and motor skills. The exercises are diverse and are specifically tailored to the needs of the patients. As far as possible, children work in a playful way. Muscle massages can also be part of your area of responsibility. The devices used largely correspond to European standards. However, the standard in hospitals in African countries is sometimes lower than in Central Europe.

Your exact working hours depend on the assignment and will be discussed with you on site. Basically, you work a maximum of 40 hours on 5 days a week.

Volunteer House in Windhoek

You live in an international volunteer house. Here the volunteers have double rooms (separated by gender) available. The bathrooms are shared with the roommates on the floor and the communal kitchens with all residents of the house. There is also a small balcony and another outdoor area with a barbecue.

Some of the residents come from Namibia, Zimbabwe, Malawi and many other countries - so here you have the unique opportunity to make many international contacts.

There are housekeeping staff to keep the bathrooms and floors clean. However, you are responsible for the cleanliness of your room and you also take care of tasks such as washing the dishes after breakfast. To wash your clothes, you can use the laundry service for N$80 (approx. 4,80 euros) per 3kg of laundry.

Food will be provided to you at the Volunteer House, which you can use to prepare your breakfast. These include oatmeal, porridge, toast and peanut butter, as well as coffee, tea and milk. You can easily buy more in the surrounding area. There is a gas station, shops, restaurants and bars where you can shop. It takes about five to ten minutes to get there by taxi. You can also use the taxi to drive to your location. Depending on your project, it will take you about 20 to 25 minutes to get there.

There are also plans for joint activities: every two weeks, the team and volunteers go out to eat together or meet up for a sundowner.

Guesthouse in Windhoek

As an alternative to the Volunteer House, there is the option of staying in the guesthouse with up to 9 other volunteers. The rooms at the property can be booked as either single rooms or shared rooms and are each equipped with a bathroom and a small kitchen with a mini oven and 2 hotplates. Outside there is a barbecue area and a pool.

Here, too, you will be provided with food that you can use to prepare your breakfast. These include toast, peanut butter, oatmeal, porridge, milk, sugar, coffee and tea. You can easily buy more in the surrounding area. About a 20-minute walk away is Wernhil Park, a shopping center with a large grocery store.

The Volunteer House is only about 300 meters away, which means nothing stands in the way of contact and joint activities with the other volunteers.
