Volunteer work in a creative workshop in Namibia

What's the matter?

Namibia is one of the emerging countries in Africa, which explains the enormous difference between rich and poor. A large part of the population lives below the international poverty line. This is mainly due to weaknesses in the education system and a lack of jobs. Women in particular often find it difficult to find work.

The art workshop in Windhoek was founded to give women skills that would give them the opportunity to get a job. Women with disabilities are now also employed there. This project produces artistic fabrics, glass beads and jewelry. Painting, pottery and growing vegetables are also part of the project work. As a volunteer, you are an integral part of the production process, meaning you support daily operations, such as painting the fabrics. Workshops are offered to help women train in various trades.

The artistic goods made by hand are exceptional unique pieces made from environmentally friendly materials. In addition to a sewing studio, there is an embroidery department, a pottery workshop and a painting workshop. The project also has bungalows for rent to tourists, a restaurant, chickens whose eggs are sold and a vegetable garden.

Our art project in Windhoek aims to counteract female unemployment locally. The project's employees receive a regular income and prospects for a better life through secure employment in the company. Help and support the women to artistically design bags, curtains and pillowcases with African motifs and sell them!

In the long term, the women should be empowered to run the social enterprise themselves and thus support themselves. As a volunteer, you help by bringing in creative new ideas and actively supporting the employees!

Your tasks as a volunteer

During your volunteer work in an art workshop in Namibia you will help in various work areas. You can specialize or take turns tackling all areas. For example, you support the employees in painting the fabrics, embroidering, pottery and processing glass beads. It is often the case that you are assigned to where your help is currently most needed. For example, if a large order of flower pots has been secured, you will help paint until the order is complete.

Depending on your skill and interest, you can create new creative designs together with your colleagues. Administrative work may also arise. It is best to always discuss with your colleagues where your help is particularly needed. Of course, you are also welcome to bring in your own ideas and help to develop new products. The team looks forward to your creative input!

You usually work from Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 17:00 p.m. However, the exact working hours can vary and will be agreed on site with the project management. Depending on the tasks involved, you will work with your colleagues in a team or take on independent activities. In addition to a 30-minute breakfast break, you have a one-hour lunch break every day, during which you can eat something.

Volunteer House in Windhoek

You live in an international volunteer house. Here the volunteers have double rooms (separated by gender) available. The bathrooms are shared with the roommates on the floor and the communal kitchens with all residents of the house. There is also a small balcony and another outdoor area with a barbecue.

Some of the residents come from Namibia, Zimbabwe, Malawi and many other countries - so here you have the unique opportunity to make many international contacts.

There are housekeeping staff to keep the bathrooms and floors clean. However, you are responsible for the cleanliness of your room and you also take care of tasks such as washing the dishes after breakfast. To wash your clothes, you can use the laundry service for N$80 (approx. 4,80 euros) per 3kg of laundry.

Food will be provided to you at the Volunteer House, which you can use to prepare your breakfast. These include oatmeal, porridge, toast and peanut butter, as well as coffee, tea and milk. You can easily buy more in the surrounding area. There is a gas station, shops, restaurants and bars where you can shop. It takes about five to ten minutes to get there by taxi. You can also use the taxi to drive to your location. Depending on your project, it will take you about 20 to 25 minutes to get there.

There are also plans for joint activities: every two weeks, the team and volunteers go out to eat together or meet up for a sundowner.

Guesthouse in Windhoek

As an alternative to the Volunteer House, there is the option of staying in the guesthouse with up to 9 other volunteers. The rooms at the property can be booked as either single rooms or shared rooms and are each equipped with a bathroom and a small kitchen with a mini oven and 2 hotplates. Outside there is a barbecue area and a pool.

Here, too, you will be provided with food that you can use to prepare your breakfast. These include toast, peanut butter, oatmeal, porridge, milk, sugar, coffee and tea. You can easily buy more in the surrounding area. About a 20-minute walk away is Wernhil Park, a shopping center with a large grocery store.

The Volunteer House is only about 300 meters away, which means nothing stands in the way of contact and joint activities with the other volunteers.
