Volunteer at the After School Club in Namibia

What's the matter?

In Namibia there are serious quality differences between state and private schools. In state schools there is often a lack of qualified teachers and therefore of the possibility of individually supporting and integrating students. In addition, not all parents can afford to send their child to a private school.

For this reason, it is all the more important that the children and young people get help with their homework after school. This is what our After School Club in Windhoek is committed to. The non-profit project has existed since 2003 and is located in Katutura, the city's shanty town district.

In addition to school help, the children and young people are supported here primarily through sporting activities. It is important to enable the children to have a regular daily routine with sufficient care and encouragement. Supervisors and motivated volunteers are very welcome here!

The work in the project takes place after school and offers intensive, holistic afternoon care. The students are encouraged both physically and mentally, with a particular focus on personal development.

On weekdays, between 80 and 100 children and young people of various ages come to the deployment site. The After School Club usually has four full-time employees and up to eight volunteers. In addition to three classrooms, the facility also includes sanitary facilities, a garden and a sports area.

Your tasks as a volunteer

As a volunteer in the After School Club, you give the children private tuition, help with their homework and get involved in the leisure activities for the needy children and young people. As a volunteer, you are also welcome to independently supervise and teach a group. Many children have difficulties with math in particular, so you can support them in this subject in particular. The standards in the schools in Namibia are not as high as in Germany. So you can definitely help in this area, even if you don't have particularly sophisticated math skills.

Of course, you can also take on other subjects or simply lend a helping hand. You can also get involved in the project in numerous sports activities, such as football or cycling. Your area of responsibility as a volunteer is very broad and you can fully contribute your strengths and talents.

The After School Club is open Monday through Friday from 13:30 p.m. to 17:00 p.m. On Friday there is often a workshop on life skills. Your work starts at 13 p.m. when the first school children come to the project. First they get lunch, from 14:15 p.m. the one-hour private tuition begins - until then you can also spend time with the smaller children.

After class you will help with homework supervision for about an hour. If necessary, you can specifically address individual questions with individual students. The sports program starts around 16 p.m. Afternoon care ends at 17 p.m. and the children are either picked up or walk home.

During your stay abroad, you usually work about four hours a day from Monday to Friday. Sometimes your support is also needed on weekends. If you want, this volunteer project can also be easily combined with another project.

Volunteer House in Windhoek

You live in an international volunteer house. Here the volunteers have double rooms (separated by gender) available. The bathrooms are shared with the roommates on the floor and the communal kitchens with all residents of the house. There is also a small balcony and another outdoor area with a barbecue.

Some of the residents come from Namibia, Zimbabwe, Malawi and many other countries - so here you have the unique opportunity to make many international contacts.

There are housekeeping staff to keep the bathrooms and floors clean. However, you are responsible for the cleanliness of your room and you also take care of tasks such as washing the dishes after breakfast. To wash your clothes, you can use the laundry service for N$80 (approx. 4,80 euros) per 3kg of laundry.

Food will be provided to you at the Volunteer House, which you can use to prepare your breakfast. These include oatmeal, porridge, toast and peanut butter, as well as coffee, tea and milk. You can easily buy more in the surrounding area. There is a gas station, shops, restaurants and bars where you can shop. It takes about five to ten minutes to get there by taxi. You can also use the taxi to drive to your location. Depending on your project, it will take you about 20 to 25 minutes to get there.

There are also plans for joint activities: every two weeks, the team and volunteers go out to eat together or meet up for a sundowner.

Guesthouse in Windhoek

As an alternative to the Volunteer House, there is the option of staying in the guesthouse with up to 9 other volunteers. The rooms at the property can be booked as either single rooms or shared rooms and are each equipped with a bathroom and a small kitchen with a mini oven and 2 hotplates. Outside there is a barbecue area and a pool.

Here, too, you will be provided with food that you can use to prepare your breakfast. These include toast, peanut butter, oatmeal, porridge, milk, sugar, coffee and tea. You can easily buy more in the surrounding area. About a 20-minute walk away is Wernhil Park, a shopping center with a large grocery store.

The Volunteer House is only about 300 meters away, which means nothing stands in the way of contact and joint activities with the other volunteers.
