  • Directly at the sea
  • Knowledge sharing
  • Surrounded by nature

In this project you will support conservationists and marine biologists in their daily work underwater, on the water and on land. The research stations and your accommodation are located on an idyllic island on the west coast of Greece. Environmental protection is a very current and explosive topic. Participating in this project is your chance to work for our nature on land and in the water to protect, explore and conserve it. You like to work outside and love nature? Then this project is the right place for you!

Conservation project in Greece

What's the matter?

Let yourself be enchanted by the Ionian Islands, which score with their beautiful villages, mysterious places and impressive nature. The archipelago in the Ionian Sea consists of seven islands whose landscapes are incredibly contrasting: from impressive coastlines to forested green mountains and sweeping plains lined with olive and cypress trees. Small or large, green or mineral, mountainous or flat: no two islands are alike and yet they all have an incomparable Mediterranean flair. Would you like to live in such a paradisiacal place? Then you've come to the right place in our wildlife and environmental protection project!

The Ionian Islands are highly sought after for their biosphere. Because as a hotspot for botanical diversity with a high number of fish spawning grounds, bird migration routes and marine mammals, this area represents a promising source of money for mass production. Unfortunately, this has affected the area badly, so that the environment suffers greatly. This has far-reaching consequences that urgently need to be prevented. The long-term goal is therefore to restore the ecosystem. By supporting the project, you can make a small contribution to preserving the environment on the Ionian Islands.

The non-profit organization, which has existed since 2014, works together with the local volunteer program to protect the environment. Your volunteer site also works to stop the polluting processes and peacefully displace them so that traditional forms of environmental protection can be restored. Your assignment is an independent organization, unaffiliated with corporate interests or political parties, and openly protesting the way the territory is to be divided up.

Your tasks as a volunteer

Depending on their level of knowledge or interests, each volunteer is deployed accordingly. You don't necessarily have to have any special expertise. The program is perfect for you if you want to gain experience in the field of species conservation and the environment. The following tasks can await you in the project:

  • Building an eco-community on one of the islands in the Ionian Sea and an experimental organic fruit and vegetable farm
  • Monitoring of wild cats on a small group of islands in the Ionian Sea
  • Monitoring of marine ecosystems: Mediterranean monk seal monitoring and seagrass mapping
  • Ornithological habitat surveys (land-based surveys of bird behavior and population dynamics)
  • wildlife surveillance
  • Agricultural works like planting, weeding, seeding, harvesting and growing in the eco community
  • Work in caves (rare)

In addition to the main tasks, theses are also made from time to time, which should benefit the island. These theses are put into practice to see if the thesis can be confirmed. An example: Planting trees is said to increase the breeding behavior of birds. However, work of this kind only happens occasionally.

You work five hours a day, five days a week. Usually from Monday to Friday - sometimes it is also postponed if, for example, you cannot work on a rainy day. Then you might work on a Sunday and have Monday off.

In addition, the work often depends on the weather, which means that in summer, for example, the good weather should be used for field work. However, if it rains, is very windy or hot, then of course no field work is possible. During this time, the volunteers can, for example, evaluate the collected data and information (bird calls, photos from the camera traps) or sort out data on vegetation (maritime or terrestrial). From June to September the focus is on seagrass monitoring.

Accommodation Catering

Volunteer House in the Ionian Islands

You live with a maximum of 13 other volunteers in a recently renovated, traditional, two-storey stone house with a large veranda. The first floor is an open-air laboratory and can also be used as a meeting place. You and your volunteer friends have a shared kitchen, two bathrooms, two interior seating areas and a total of 14 beds at your disposal. For the summer the house has fans to cool you down and in the winter you can warm up by a wood stove.

There is a large kitchen where you can cook together with the other volunteers and the team. Kitchen utensils and food, such as oil and spices, are available to you. You can get the ingredients nearby and from controlled cultivation. From time to time the team also goes to a local tavern together. You can use the washing machine and drying areas free of charge, and there is also a cleaning service once a week that takes care of bed linen, towels and dishes. Shops, restaurants, cafés, bars and beaches are within walking distance - you will also find a sports facility for basketball and football nearby.

Most of the time you are on foot in teams (two or more people) on the way to the deployment site - either on public roads or footpaths. However, sometimes you will also be traveling by boat, with your way to work taking you through the Mediterranean Sea. Depending on which island you are headed for, the journey can take up to three hours.

About 10 to 15 days a year, the team camps with the volunteers on the remote islands for monk seal monitoring (and other environmental activities). Mostly camping takes place on the northern part of Kastos or Atokos islands. There is no guarantee that you will actually camp 10 to 15 days at a time. The periods vary and depend on the current and necessary activities. All equipment is provided and transportation is taken care of by the local team. You are responsible for your own meals while camping.

Location

Ionian Islands

The Ionian Islands lie off the west coast of Greece in the Ionian Sea. A total of about 50 islands belong to this group. Corfu, with its historic old town, is particularly popular with travelers. But the other larger and smaller islands also have a lot to offer!

Of course, it is above all the fantastic beaches that impress many here. White sandy beaches and turquoise blue water - exactly how you imagine a classic holiday paradise! Inland, vineyards, olive trees and pine trees adorn the landscape. In the port towns and mountain villages, on the other hand, there are numerous castles, churches and monasteries to discover.

Would you like to get to know life on a Greek island and above all work to protect and preserve this natural diversity? Then this location is perfect for you! Especially if you are interested in environmental and marine biology research and would like to get involved in this area.

Free time in the Ionian Islands

Your free time in the Ionian Islands

Kalimera! On the Ionian Islands you can enjoy the Greek way of life to the fullest. Your project location is on a quiet island. Nevertheless, in your free time you can enjoy Greek delicacies in traditional restaurants, end the evening relaxed in a bar, let off steam in the nearby sports hall with a game of football or basketball or simply relax on the beach.

If you have a little more time available, make sure to use it for extensive island hopping! The island of Lefkada is a good starting point. It will captivate you with its contrasting landscapes: on the one hand the east coast with its gentle, flat beaches and dense vegetation and on the other hand the wild west coast with steep cliffs and deep blue water.

From Lefkada you hop on to Kefalonia. Here you will find a rough landscape. White limestone cliffs line the coast and enclose the turquoise waters in the bays. Continue to Ithaca, home of the famous Odysseus. The quiet island invites you to simply relax and unwind.

Hop back to Kefalonia and from there to the island of Zakynthos. In addition to the beautiful beaches, you can also visit the tranquil villages or discover the beautiful nature while hiking.

On-site procedure

Arrive in the Ionian Islands

Arrive in Athens and onward journey

You first arrive at the airport in Athens. It makes sense if you stay one night in Athens and start your onward journey the next day as it starts very early. You then travel to the island by public transport: first by bus and then by ferry. The bus ride takes five hours, the bus ticket is valid for the return trip and for two months. Getting to the island is not included in the price. Finally, the coordinator will pick you up on the island and take you to your accommodation.

This is followed by a brief tour of the site and facilities. Afterwards you will be invited to a welcome dinner together with other volunteers. After you have been exploring with your new colleagues for a few hours, there is another guided tour of the village and you will be shown grocery stores, restaurants and doctor's offices. The team will also teach you about the history of the village and the local people.
