Look after children and teenagers in Costa Rica

What's the matter?

The non-profit organization was founded in 2005 to improve the quality of life of disadvantaged families and children. The organization lacks trained staff who can give tutoring in order to improve the school performance of the foundation children and to promote their development in all areas. That is why you are very welcome here as a volunteer!

The care of children and young people from disadvantaged families, the provision of food and rooms for leisure activities and academic support. It should be ensured that the socially vulnerable minors eat healthy food and receive a good education - not only to increase their professional opportunities, but of course also to improve their quality of life.

Your tasks as a volunteer

You mainly look after the kids and make sure that they are doing well. You make sure that they do their homework and help them with it. To let them discover their creativity and talents and to promote the development of the children, you support them with painting, handicrafts and maybe you even have other ideas.

You are cordially invited to work on your own initiative and can, for example, start a sports project for the little ones. With lots of games and exercises, the children learn different skills and their fine motor skills can be improved. Maybe you also have ideas for learning languages through play or how to bring different cultures closer to small children.

You will also take care of setting and cleaning the children's breakfast tables and cleaning various rooms. You will also support the on-site staff in preparing and conducting workshops. Collecting donations and personal customer care are also part of your activities and if you already have social media experience, you can get involved here and maintain and look after various channels.

You work either in the donation center or in the foundation. Your working hours are usually 7 hours per day, Monday to Friday. The center is open weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 22:00 p.m.; Volunteers communicate with the supervisors on site about how to organize their times.

It is important that you are open to the children and have the necessary energy to take part in the leisure activities. Also, get involved in the team so that there is order in workshops and various activities.

Your daily companions include a team on site: Mauren is responsible for all areas of responsibility relating to the kitchen, human resources management and finances. Melissa takes care of the general administration of day-to-day operations, coordination, but also teaching English and looking after children. Your third contact is Carolina: She is responsible for communication with parents, general administration, cleanliness, as well as the development of the children. These friendly and courteous people form the core team of this project and are always there for you if you have any questions.

Location

San Jose in Costa Rica

San Jose

San José is the capital of Costa Rica and is located in the middle of the country. From here you have the opportunity to drive to all regions of the country within a few hours.

The convenient location means that both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts are a short distance away, as are the cloud forests inland. Around 340.000 people live in San José itself – 1,6 million in the entire metropolitan area. The city sits at 1.170 meters above sea level, giving it pleasant spring-like weather all year round. The temperatures vary only slightly and are around 15 to 26 °C. However, San José also has a rainy season from May to November; the rest of the year it is dry.

For those interested in history, art, architecture, and culture, San Jose is a great place to start a Costa Rican itinerary. But San José is also an excellent starting point for all outdoor and nature enthusiasts, because you will find rainforests, tropical islands and volcanoes nearby. There is so much to discover both in the city itself and in the surrounding area!

Free time in San Jose

Your free time in San José

San José or "Chepe", as Costa Rica's capital is also called, is embedded in the beautiful nature of the country. The city itself offers a variety of sights that you should definitely visit. Buildings in the Spanish colonial style are characteristic and in the historic district of Barrio Amón there are rows of magnificent villas that have been converted into galleries. In other neighborhoods, colorful graffiti adorns the walls of buildings and enlivens the cityscape.

San José is considered the cultural center of Costa Rica: you should definitely not miss the National Theater in the heart of the city. You can take a guided tour there during the day and enjoy excellent performances in the evening. In addition, San José has a high density of museums. For example, visit the National Museum, the Jade Museum or the Gold Museum.

You get a culinary experience when you visit the Mercado Central. Delicious fruit and vegetables, fresh fish, meat and fragrant herbs, spices and coffee beans are piled high in the market hall.

Similar to New York, San José also has a “green lung”. The La Sabana Metropolitan Park invites you to take long walks and you will also find the national stadium there, where football matches are regularly played.

Due to its central location, the capital is an ideal starting point for excursions in the surrounding area. How about a trip to a coffee plantation, for example? After all, Costa Rica is notorious for its excellent coffee. But also the national park around the active volcano Poás with its green lagoons and deep crater lakes is an absolute must-see. For even more action, you can also go whitewater rafting through the jungle or swing through tropical rainforests on cable cars and ziplines.

You can also enjoy the beach and the sea. You even have the choice between the Caribbean and the Pacific: Both coasts can be reached within two to four hours and invite you to relax with their white beaches and palm trees.
