Your medical orientation internship in Zanzibar

What's the matter?

Gain valuable insights into the Tanzanian healthcare system during an internship in a clinic in Zanzibar - regardless of whether you want to orientate yourself professionally or gain practical work insights while studying.

The island of Zanzibar is popular with tourists from all over the world because of its beautiful beaches, historic walls and spice plantations. However, health care in Zanzibar faces many challenges. Among other things, HIV is widespread in the population.

As an intern, the overall lower standard in the hospitals may present you with a challenge. At the same time, this allows you to learn how to get along with less modern tools.

In addition, you will improve your language skills, train your intercultural skills and immerse yourself in life in Tanzania. A unique experience!

Notes on standards – medical internship abroad

Your internship in the medical field

For whom is the internship suitable?

You can complete the medical internship abroad for professional orientation without any prior knowledge. If you are already a medical student or are in medical training, you can also complete the internship as an in-depth or specialist internship. Do you already have previous knowledge? Then volunteer work in the medical field in Tanzania is also possible for you.

Your placements for the medical internship in Zanzibar

In Zanzibar you will do your internship in a hospital. The facility is large and relatively well equipped. More than 1000 patients are cared for here every day.

Your internship abroad is to be understood as an internship. You will accompany the specialist staff on site and observe them. Depending on the duration of your internship and your previous knowledge, you can gradually take on smaller jobs and assist the nurses and doctors. In some cases, you also have the opportunity to attend an operation.

At the specialization and internship positions, the selection is based on the requirements of your educational institution.

Since a large part of the population in Zanzibar does not understand English, it is advisable to attend a Swahili language course.

Possibility to recognize a compulsory internship

If you would like to have your RGV internship abroad recognized as part of your studies or training, be sure to inform yourself beforehand about the regulations of your university or your training company. Usually there are special requirements regarding the duration and the activities. Please inform us in advance about the templates from the university/training company so that everything can run smoothly.

Regardless of whether you are doing a mandatory or orientation internship - after completing your RGV stay abroad, you will receive a certificate of participation from us.

Your working day in the internship

Your working hours in the internship are from approx. 7:30 a.m. to 16:00 p.m. If you wish, you can also work in the evening. Of course you have a lunch break in between.

From there you can get to almost every place on the island in about an hour. There is also a market, restaurant and shop nearby. It takes about 20 minutes by bus to get to Stone Town.

Chuini Beach House in Bububu

Location

Zanzibar.

Turquoise blue, crystal clear sea, white sandy beaches, fascinating sights and lots of outdoor adventures - you can experience all of this while volunteering in Zanzibar!

Historically speaking, the “Island of Spices” has played an important role. Because Zanzibar went down in history as an important hub of Arab and Asian trade relations. In addition to gold, ivory, spices and wood, slaves were also traded here until the 19th century.

The archipelago's capital, Zanzibar Town, has a picturesque waterfront harbour. The mixture of African, Arabic, Indian and European influences that is characteristic of Zanzibar is particularly evident here. Colorful merchant houses with balconies and mango trees line the small streets.

In Zanzibar, a true paradise of dreamlike palm beaches and colourful, lively towns awaits you! Do you like spending time by the sea and want to explore this unique island? Then on to Zanzibar!

Your free time in Zanzibar

“Karibu Sana Zanzibar” – Welcome to Zanzibar! Use your free time, go on excursions with other volunteers or explore historic Stown Town. Turquoise blue, crystal clear sea, white sandy beaches, fascinating sights and lots of outdoor adventures - you can experience all of this in Zanzibar!

Your volunteer program in Zanzibar includes a day trip to Nakupenda Beach. At noon we go together with a boat to Nakupenda Beach, a sandbar, which is located a few kilometers from Stonetown in the middle of the sea. Depending on the tide, the sandbar is larger or smaller. We swim in the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean and eat and drink together. If the weather and the tides allow, we will stay until the evening and end the evening around a campfire.

In front of Zanzibar's capital, Zanzibar Town, there is a pleasant scent in the air. Huge spice plantations stretch out here, on which turmeric and cinnamon, among other things, are grown. No wonder Zanzibar is also called the island of spices. In the Jozani forest in the south of the island you can, with a bit of luck, spot the rare red colobus monkeys or watch dolphins on the coast of the small town of Kizimkazi.

The old town of Stone Town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. The colorful merchant houses and the small streets lined with mango trees look like something out of a picture book. Small shops that exude the scent of cloves invite you to buy or at least admire embroidered bags, traditional African clothing and handmade fabrics.

If you have a little more time available, for example after your volunteer work, you can also explore the Tanzanian mainland. How about a safari in the famous Serengeti? Or scale the snowy peak of Kilimanjaro!
